Adventures of a Soccer Mom: Soccer Mom Survival Kit

I am a soccer mom! Oh, it takes a lot for me to admit this. Growing up I lived on a small farm, so the kids who thought hard work was kicking a ball around, we kind of laughed at...... Well, karma. I honestly thought I was going to be the heavy metal rock band mom. I'm not sure why I had that picture in my head. It may have been because instead of classic music, on the belly I played Nirvana. So back to, I am a soccer mom. My son started soccer at the age of 3, since then I have learned what is a must have to have on the field. Here is my Soccer Mom Survival Kit.

5 Books (Sets) That Your 8 Year Old Son Will Actually Read

So if you're anything like me, you scour the bookshelf of the library trying to find books to fill your sons reading log. Book after book you show him, and the same disgusted face with the shake of the head no you receive. It's sooo frustrating.

I'm a book warm, I'll read about anything you put in front of me. I don't understand where this kid is coming from. I blame his father!!! So I have compiled a list of books that I have gotten him to read and he has enjoyed.

Diary Of a Mine Craft Zombie

My son eats these up. He will even read passed his minimum reading time to finish a chapter. Mine Craft Gaming books are a series of 1-11 so far. It's rare that my son asks for new books, but when they have come out with a new book in the series he is quick to ask to get it.
Dairy of a Wimpy Kid

These are the books that he asks for most at the school book fairs! Often times when he is reading these books he comes to me and reads out loud something he finds funny. A good sign he likes what he is reading.

Max

This is an unexpected book my son liked. We saw the movie before he got the book as a Christmas gift. So it shocked me that he even picked up the book then finished it without me pushing him too. He read it straight through all on his own. But he still likes the movie better.

Harry Potter

Confession! I love this series! I'm an over the moon Harry Potter fan. So my son does not read them himself but LOVES when I read them to him. Usually, during the summer times, I will give him a break in reading and read a book out of this series.

Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger

This one he started reading and thinks it's hilarious.

If you find it hard to find books for your child, ask their school's librarian. Mine was the one that directed me to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. I also take my son to the bookstore often and let him pick out 1 non-chapter book for every 2 chapter books he gets. The key is the find books that you child likes to read. It has taken me a long time and a lot of frustrating hours to figure out his style. But if he likes to read about raunchy fart jokes, raunchy fart jokes it is!

Hiking Adventure! Me vs Blisters

This is the first time in all of my hiking endeavors that I have gotten a blister. I'm not sure what I did differently this time, to deserve a blister, but I don't like them and I don't want another one.

Blister Causes
When hiking a blister occurs because of repetitive friction. There are other ways that blisters happen but we are talking about hiking in this post. I believe why I got a blister this time is because of my feet getting cold from the snow, and they got a little wet. I was wearing 2 pairs of socks, so they must have been slipping around some.

Blister Prevention.
Reduce friction!
Have properly laced and fitted footwear.
Make sure you break your shoes in before a hike.
Keep clean and dry.
Tape known problem areas.

Treatment After Blister
Essential oils and rest the affected area.
My go to is Lavender and Chamomile mix with Aloe.
Learn about mixing oils here.
This time because I realized I was out of lavender. I used Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, and Tea Tree mixed with coconut oil. Within an hour I could lightly walk on it, and the next morning it was gone. I was so sore from the hike anyway I wasn't up for much walking the rest of the day.

I do not usually pop my blisters, it always makes them hurt more for me, but if you must here are the steps.
Wash hands
Sterilize a needle and prick the blister and squeeze out the fluid.
Do not peel the skin away, it will help protect affected area.
Place a band-aid over your blister.

Now for the fun stuff pictures of our hike! We went to Kamikaze/Teneriffe Falls in North Bend WA.

How do you guys take care of blisters? I would love to hear it, comment below!

Get Fit for Hiking Challenge!

Ok friends, if you are anything like me you can't wait for spring to come so you can get out into nature and get hiking without freezing your tail off. Also if your anything like me you're still carrying around what you enjoyed for Christmas dinner and feel sluggish on the trail. The solution, get fit for hiking challenge!

Challenge Terms
Start with 1 or 2 daily exercises that prepare you for intense hikes.
Increase reps or time every 2 weeks
Add an exercise every 4 weeks
Challenge ends March 20

I am starting with
10 squats
5 burpees
1 min weighted hula hoop

My first goal is to establish a routine. Find out when the best times works for me and so on. That is why I am starting out almost easy. I don't want to get overwhelmed at first with a hard workout and also having to adjust to finding a daily routine as well. You should start where you are comfortable.

I choose squats to build leg strength. this will help me on the long uphill hikes. Burpees, I hate burpees, for the cardio. I find that I have to take frequent breaks holding everyone up to catch my breath. Hula hooping is a fun core workout, it's all about the core right.

If you choose to do this challenge with me feel free to tailor your workout to fit your needs. The whole goal of this challenge is to get us in better shape for the spring hikes. If you are doing this with me and choose to step up your game here are some exercises that will help you out.

Walking Lunge
One Leg Dead Lift
Calf Raises
Balanced Jumps
Side Lunge
Jumping Jacks
Plank
Wall Sits

I will post updates in the comment section feel free to do the same, I would love to hear how you are doing, and cheer you on.

How We Celebrate Valentines Day on the Cheap!

If your anything like my family right now, your broke! Christmas, overdone, but that happens every year so you're really not devastated. But the holidays never end so you have to plan for Valentine's day. Looking at the budget you don't really have the money to pay for a sitter and go out to eat, buy gifts for your spouse and kids, but you don't want to ignore the holiday altogether. So what do you do?

Here is what we do.

The Gift
I ask my husband to do something for me that needs to be done but I don't want to do. My favorite to ask is detailing my car. I ask him to do this every Valentines and Mothers Day. It's cheap but yet sooooo nice. I usually give my hubby a full body massage. My husband doesn't get these on a regular basis even though I am a massage therapist. You know your partner better than anyone else do something that they will really appreciate to show your love. Cause that is what that day is all about yeah?

If your partner is the kind that likes receiving gifts more than not, then find something that they need or something cheap that they wouldn't already buy for themselves. For example, when my husband is feeling like a big spender he will buy me my favorite bottle of wine, I'm cheap it's 11 bucks, and chocolate covered strawberries. I love it!!

The Kids
Kids are easy, chocolate! I buy them whatever cute chocolate/candy box that they are into for that year. For dinner, we cook, or go to Papa Murphy's and get the heart shaped pizza. If I remember right its between 8-11 bucks a pizza. They love it.

The Date
After we send the kids to bed, we get romantic with Netflix and Chill.

For the whole day, I can spend as little as $40, including the pizza and kids gifts. We like it, it's a low key low spend holiday for us. I get my car cleaned he gets some much-needed attention and the kids have fun eating pizza and chocolate.

2016 Lessons and Goals for 2017

For my first six months blogging I have learned an overwhelming amount. I started this blog because I like to make a positive impact on people and because I thought it would be fun. I'm not sure how much of an impact it has made but it has been fun, and a whole lot of work. More work than I originally thought it would be, but, hey nothing good in life come easy yea?

So What Have I Learned

Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint.
It all takes time, building a blog, finding readers, gaining their trust. I started this adventure not knowing what to expect and I didn't have high expectations of how it was going to go so, patience is on my side for this aspect.

Consistency is key.
At first, I had all these ideas and I was popping them out pretty rapidly, but then my ideas slowed then so did my posting, then the holidays happen. So the traffic on my site has been all over the place. As a blog reader, that is not ideal.

Writing a good blog post is a whole lot harder than I thought.
One of the qualities that I thought qualified myself for being a blogger is that in conversations I am a good story teller. So when I try to take a story that I've told and had a good reaction from and apply it to paper, something happens, it's not as good. I'm hoping practice can fix this.

Goals for 2017

I'm going to slow down my posting.
Twice a month will be my posting schedule. I want to work a lot on quality. Up until now, even this post, I would get an idea, write it in 10 minutes, edited maybe the next day then post it. I was just so excited I couldn't wait. With posting less I'll have more time to think about my post a little more, read and edit them more, and come up with really good quality topics.

Social Media
Learn how to use this tool better. I don't use social media a bunch in my personal life so learning how to navigate this will be a challenge for me.

I'm adding a few more chapters.
Fitness, I am, like just about everyone else trying to be more healthy. So I plan on throwing a few post about how I am doing with that. You have seen my post about hiking, I plan on expanding that a little bit and see how that goes.

Smoothies.
I love smoothies and make them often for breakfast. The plan is to figure out how to do a post with a recipe and post some of my smoothy recipes for you.

I thank you!
I thank you for sticking with me while I'm learning this whole blogging business. I hope that you will stick with me and watch me grow. I hope that you have had a great 2016 and that your 2017 is even better!
